Your GTA 6 launch-day checklist

GTA 6 is the biggest launch in years, and servers, stores and downloads will be busy. Do these now and you’ll be playing while everyone else is still waiting.

1. Free up storage

Rockstar hasn’t published the final size, but reports point to around 210 GB. Clear more than that, since the day-one patch adds more. On PS5 an NVMe expansion SSD is the simplest fix if you’re always deleting games.

2. Check your preorder is on the right account

Digital pre-orders preload from November 12 and are tied to the account that bought them. If you share a console, make sure it’s on the account you play on.

3. Turn on automatic downloads

On PS5: Settings → System → Power Saving → Features Available in Rest Mode → enable Stay Connected to the Internet. On Xbox, set Power mode to sleep and enable updates. Your console will then grab the November 12 preload on its own.

4. Update your console the night before

A system update at midnight is the worst way to start.

5. Charge your controller

Or keep a cable within reach. Long first sessions are guaranteed.

6. Pick your display settings

If you have a 4K TV, check its game mode and HDR settings now. Most console games offer a quality mode and a performance mode — decide which you prefer before you’re mid-mission.

7. Mute spoiler words

Mute “GTA 6 ending”, “GTA 6 spoilers” and character names on social apps for the first weeks.

8. Plan your first hours

Story first, then explore? Or straight into chaos? Either way, our guides go live on day one.

9. Bookmark the cheat tracker

The GTA 6 cheat tracker is the first thing we update when the game unlocks.
