GTA 6 file size: up to 212 GB
Rockstar confirms the GTA 6 preload needs up to 212 GB. Here's what that means for every console, how much free space to keep, and how to make room before preload on November 10.
Updated · Published
Now official: the GTA 6 preload needs up to 212 GB, depending on your console. Rockstar confirmed it on November 3, 2026, matching the ~210 GB that PlayStation Store data had shown a week earlier.
To be safe, clear at least 250 GB before preload opens on November 10.
How much of your console it takes
| Console | Storage (approx. usable) | 212 GB is… |
|---|---|---|
| PS5 (original) | ~667 GB | about a third |
| PS5 Slim | ~848 GB | about a quarter |
| PS5 Pro | ~1.8 TB | about an eighth |
| Xbox Series X | ~802 GB | about a quarter |
| Xbox Series S (512 GB) | ~364 GB | more than half |
Series S and original PS5 owners will feel it most. If you keep other big games installed, aim for 300 GB free.
Why you need more than 212 GB
- Unpacking. Consoles copy and decompress during install, which needs temporary headroom.
- Day-one patch. Not announced, but big launches almost always get one.
- Ultimate Edition content hasn’t had its own size listed.
Make room in five minutes
- Sort by size. PS5: Settings → Storage → Console Storage → Games and Apps. Xbox: My games & apps → Manage → Storage.
- Archive, don’t redownload. Move older PS5 games or PS4 titles to a USB drive. They copy back faster than they download.
- Delete video captures. Clips and screenshots quietly take tens of gigabytes.
- Remove optional language packs and modes you don’t use (Call of Duty lets you uninstall single parts).
- Turn on preload. Pre-ordered digitally? Make sure auto-download is on so it starts on November 10 (midnight local on PS5, 12 a.m. GMT on Xbox).
Every menu, step by step, plus which upgrades can actually run the game: free up 212 GB on Vice Tips.
Upgrade storage (if you need to)
- PS5: any PCIe Gen4 M.2 NVMe SSD at 5,500 MB/s or faster, with a heatsink. 1 TB or 2 TB drives are the sweet spot.
- Xbox Series X|S: the official Seagate or WD_BLACK expansion card. Ordinary USB drives can only store current-gen games.
Is the file size final?
212 GB is the preload. A day-one patch hasn’t been announced, but if one comes it adds to that, which is why we suggest 250 GB free.
Quick answers
How big is GTA 6?
Up to 212 GB depending on your console, according to Rockstar's November 3, 2026 announcement.
How much free space do I need for GTA 6?
Plan for at least 250 GB free. Installs need extra room to unpack, and a day-one patch could add more.
Does the physical GTA 6 copy save space?
Yes, it needs the same download: Rockstar calls the boxed versions "code-in-box", meaning a download code instead of the game on a disc.
Can I play GTA 6 from an external USB drive?
On PS5 and Xbox Series X|S, current-gen games must run from the internal SSD or an approved expansion (an M.2 SSD on PS5, a Seagate/WD expansion card on Xbox). A USB drive can store it, not run it.
